Though there are countless things that make CBA a unique place educationally, perhaps our most remarkable feature is our identity as a fully incorporated arts school. Starting in our Early Childhood Program, our students are immersed in arts education, taking daily classes in theater, music, dance, and visual arts. We expose them to everything and encourage them to explore and learn more about these disciplines and about themselves and their own unique gifts. When students move into our Primary School, they have the opportunity to focus more specifically in a certain area of the arts if they want to do so. Our arts directors encourage students at this level to continue their training outside of the school day if a certain area is of special interest to them. Our local studio partnerships exist to help families to continue deepening their child's love of the arts after dismissal. By the time students enter the Intermediate School, they are given the choice of taking three electives a day from within the arts track. This allows students to determine what they are most interested in studying on a yearly basis. Some students may decide to hone in on an already-identified area of passion while others may continue to explore across the disciplines. We encourage and celebrate whichever approach feels most comfortable to each student. At the point when students enter the Upper School, they may continue to avail themselves of any of our array of electives at their own discretion or to declare a major within the arts programs. Some of these majors feature a sole focus in one track while others are a cooperative effort among multiple arts disciplines. As part of our mission to prepare students equally well for a collegiate future as a professional career within the arts, students who opt to declare a major are carefully trained and prepared throughout their Upper School years to enable them to find success upon graduation.
Our arts directors work cooperatively together with our academic teachers. They are full staff members of Canterbury Brook Academy, and as such, they are inherently interested in your child's success on every level. These arts directors attend staff meetings, remain abreast of academic successes and challenges, and attend school events to get to know our families and be more involved in the full life of their students. These dedicated and passionate educators come to us not only with a strong background in the pedagogy of their discipline but also with professional experience of their own. They work closely with one another to ensure that the arts are ALL celebrated at CBA and that our students, regardless of where their own passions end up being within the arts, respect all art forms.
