Exceptional Learners

As a private school, Canterbury Brook Academy of the Arts is able to offer special services in accordance with IEP standards through the district of our residence: Highland Falls.  As the parent of an exceptional learner, you will register your son or daughter as a parentally placed child in the district, allowing the same tax dollars that would provide your child with services in the public schools in your own town with services at CBA.  Through Highland Falls, we are able to accommodate services in Speech and Language, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Vision Therapy.  We work with the district special services coordinator assigned to our building to ensure that all of our exceptional learners' needs are properly met.

However, we also employ our own in-house, full-time special services instructor who works with our students on a day-to-day basis, pushing into classrooms and establishing lasting relationships with our children.   Because our philosophy rests upon the firm belief that all children can learn, we take our responsibility toward the instruction of our exceptional learners extremely seriously.  For this reason, we ensure that our special services instructor has ample time to work with classroom teachers and students, helping students with both foundational obstacles and classroom work in real-time.

At the Primary School level, our special services instructor pushes into each classroom every day for 1-2 periods.  While she does focus on helping students make progress in ELA and math most specifically, she is available and willing to help with all areas of the curriculum and closely collaborates with district service providers to ensure that IEP goals can be met in a timely fashion.  She is also a powerful advocate for our students and their families in CSE meetings.  Her loyalties are always first and foremost to our students as she is a member of the CBA family, and she works tirelessly to ensure that our students have every possible tool at their fingertips from their entry into CBA until they graduate.
