Math and science come together in 7th grade through the use of measurement and formula calculations
A large portion of the year is spent on biology, studying the systems of the human body and the functions of these systems
Students also begin to explore more sophisticated topics in earth science such as plate tectonics, cycles of the moon, and and climate
Both the rock and water cycles are studied during 7th grade science as well
Due to the accelerated track of our students, 7th graders will also cover HS-preparatory chemistry and physics usually covered in grade 8
Grade 8 : Environmental Science
8th grade science at Canterbury Brook is a Regents Prep class
Our students are preparing to take the Environmental Science Regents should they choose to do so in June
Students will cover all material and labs necessary for success on that exam but do not HAVE to opt to take it this year if they do not want to; if they choose not to, they can opt out, but please be aware that students MUST pass one science regents before earning a Regents Diploma in 12th grade (state law)
Mathematics remains integral to science at the 8th grade level, utilizing formulas and calculations across the subject areas
This course focuses on all aspects of earth science, including space, geology, plate tectonics, climate change, and weather patterns
Grade 9: Living Environments
9th grade science at Canterbury Brook is also a Regents Prep class
Our students are preparing to take the Living Environment Regents should they choose to do so in June
Students will cover all material and labs necessary for success on that exam but do not HAVE to opt to take it this year if they do not want to, especially if they have already taken and passed a science Regents exam
Please note that in order to earn a Regents Diploma with Advanced Distinction, more than one science Regents exam must be taken and passed
This course focuses on biology and incorporates mathematics
*PLEASE NOTE: STEAM is an integral part of our science curriculum. As often as possible, students will be given the opportunity to partake in hands-on exploration and learning using a cross-curricular approach that incorporates technology, engineering, and art
Teacher's Bio
Ms. O is passionate about teaching science and helping students understand complex scientific words and processes. She has more than 20 years of experience teaching Life Science and High School Regents Biology after moving to classroom teaching from an outdoor Environmental Education classroom. Ms. O is extremely excited not only to teach the 8th grade Earth Science curriculum this year but also to work with 5th and 6th grade science, as well as helping 9th grade students with skills to tackle Regents Living Environment requirements. She has extensive experience in the arts as part of her elementary and high school career as a singer and actor in drama club and in community theater as an adult. It is her firm belief that arts education is essential to student academic success, and she looks forward to being a part of the excitement and vision that Canterbury Brook Academy of the Arts brings to education in today’s world.
