Theater

As an arts school, theater is an integral part of our program.  Our Early Childhood students, from Transitional Kindergarten through grade 2,  all take classes in theater.  Through these classes, they explore acting, theater history, improvisational techniques, stage craft, and musical theater.  By the time CBA students begin our Intermediate School program in grade 7, they are ready to make informed decisions regarding electives in theater.  Students may choose to take theater courses for all three classes of their Arts Block or a single one.

Throughout the year, our thespians have many opportunities to perform: in talent showcases, in our Fall Drama, in our Spring Musical, and at our monologue nights.  Our students can also partake in any outside productions beyond our school since our rehearsals happen during the school day, including our tech weeks.  Our theater teachers can help guide our theater students toward community opportunities for performance and growth in their field as well.

Just like the rest of CBA's students, our theater students are prepared for any path they choose to take moving forward beyond CBA.  Our rich course offerings in the Upper School allow them to pursue a collegiate education, either in music or any other area of passion.  However, these same rich course offerings ensure a level of readiness for a professional career in music coming straight out of high school that is not generally found.  We understand that not all of our students will choose to pursue a collegiate education, and we seek to ensure that our students are prepared for whatever their next step is after graduation.

Teacher Bio

Ms. Kayla Bush, a native of Rome, New York, heads up the Theater Department at Canterbury Brook Academy of the Arts.  A graduate of SUNY Geneseo, Ms. Bush has been performing for many years and has worked both educationally and professionally, performing in many venues within New York. Her passion for education lead Ms. Bush to her position at CBA.  Working extensively in youth theater, Kayla realized that she could marry her love of performance with her desire to teach.  Her experiences have inspired her to truly want to become a leader for the next generation of artists. She feels especially passionate about children having equal opportunities to explore their interests  in a safe and supportive environment.  Ms. Bush enjoys working cooperatively with the other arts educators to put on showcases and direct the spring and summer musicals at our school.  Ms. Bush is also one of the many teachers who work within our dance program, lending her talents and skills in this area as well.  She is extremely excited to be a part of the Canterbury Brook Academy of the Arts community!
