This class is the first half of French I. French I is an introduction to French language and culture. Students in this course will develop speaking, writing, and reading proficiency on topics dealing with the everyday life of a student. Students will be guided in recognizing the interrelationships between cultures and will be able to identify cultural perspectives and practices of the Francophone world. The focus of this course is developing novice-mid proficiency. This course is conducted in French an increasing amount of time as the year goes on.
8th Grade: French 1B
This class is the second half of French II. French II is a continued introduction to French language and culture. Students in this course will further develop speaking, writing, and reading proficiency on topics dealing with the everyday life of a student, deepening their ability to not only communicate about these topics in spoken words but also in writing. Students will be further guided in recognizing the interrelationships between cultures and will be able to identify cultural perspectives and practices of the Francophone world. The focus of this course is developing proficiency. This course is conducted in French an increasing amount of time as the year goes on, with the goal of creating students who will be comfortable in a largely French-speaking class in grade 9.
9th/10th Grade: French II
While the development of audio-lingual skills continues to be stressed in French II, increasing emphasis is placed on the acquisition of proficiency in reading and writing. Cultural studies will be enlarged with selected materials from contemporary magazines, short stories, poems, and visuals. Students will mostly communicate with their instructor in class, especially by the end of the year. Students will also begin practicing less topically relevant conversations, moving from basic communication skills to the true ability to converse across a multitude of topics fluently.
PLEASE NOTE: For the 2024-2025 School Year, students will be taking a combination course of French I and French II during their 9th grade year. During 10th grade, they will take a combination of French II and French III. They will not take their Regents exam until their 11th grade year. Subsequent classes will take their Regents exam in French, should they opt to do so, in 10th grade.
